Karen Sengel was born and raised in the United States but has lived overseas most of her adult life.  She and her husband Mark are international teachers. They are currently living in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai.

Karen started sewing at age six.  She started quilting fifteen years ago.

In 2006, inspired by quilter Ruth McDowell, Karen moved away from geometric patterns and began designing quilts based on line drawings.  Images are transformed into large drawings, often cutting a picture into hundreds of pieces.  Numerous fabrics are auditioned for each piece. Most of Karen’s quilts are inspired from her many years living and traveling in Asia. Her quilts are machine pieced in a traditional way and incorporate ethnic fabrics as well as commercial material.  They are then free motion quilted, adding another dimension to the design.
